RV countertop replacement is one of the highest impact interior jobs we do for Westminster owners, because the galley top is the surface everyone touches and the one that shows every year of use. Factory tops are usually thin laminate over particle board, and once water gets under the sink cutout the substrate swells and there is no repairing it. Replacing gives you a chance to change material, but material choice carries a weight penalty you should understand first.

## What the Factory Put In and Why It Fails

Almost every production coach leaves the line with a high pressure laminate top bonded to a particle board substrate, usually three quarters of an inch thick, with a rolled or self edge and a thin backsplash. It is light, it is inexpensive, and while it stays dry it lasts a long time. The failure is always the same story: water gets past the sink rim or the faucet base, wicks into the exposed particle board edge, and the substrate swells like a sponge.

Once that happens the laminate lifts, the seam at the sink opens further, and the swelling is permanent. Particle board does not shrink back down when it dries. You can sometimes buy a season by resealing the sink rim and clamping the laminate back down, and we will do that when an owner needs a stopgap before a trip. But the substrate is compromised, and once it is soft under the sink, replacement is the only durable answer.

The second common failure is heat. A pot set down straight off the cooktop will scorch laminate and can blister the bond underneath. Cutting directly on the surface leaves marks that cannot be sanded out, because the wear layer is only a few thousandths thick. None of that is a defect, it is simply what the material is. Knowing it helps when you are deciding whether the replacement should be the same material or a step up.

## Material Options and What Each One Costs You

Laminate over a plywood or moisture resistant substrate is the direct replacement and the least expensive path. Using marine grade plywood or an exterior grade substrate instead of particle board is a small upcharge that solves the original failure mode outright. You keep the weight roughly where it was, you keep the coach looking factory correct, and the top stays repairable in the sense that a damaged section can be reskinned later without a full rebuild.

Solid surface is the best all around choice for most coaches. It is an acrylic or polyester sheet with mineral filler, typically half an inch, that can be seamed nearly invisibly, sanded to remove scratches, and formed with an integral coved backsplash. It weighs roughly four to five pounds per square foot, which is manageable. Quartz and granite look excellent and cut beautifully, but they are heavy and they do not tolerate frame flex, which is a real consideration in a vehicle.

Butcher block, usually maple or acacia, is warm, repairable with a sander and oil, and lands around six pounds per square foot in a one and a half inch thickness. It needs oiling on a schedule and it does not love standing water at a sink rim, so we often pair a butcher block island or dinette top with solid surface in the wet zone. That combination looks intentional rather than compromised, and it keeps the maintenance somewhere you can manage it.

## Weight, Cargo Capacity, and the Math That Matters

Every coach has a cargo carrying capacity, the number on the yellow sticker that tells you how much you can add in people, water, propane, and gear before you exceed the rated weight. Interior upgrades come out of that number. A galley top upgrade is one of the few remodel decisions that can meaningfully eat into it, and it sits high and to one side, which also changes how the coach feels in a crosswind.

Run the numbers before you choose. A typical galley plus dinette job is 18 to 22 square feet of top. Factory laminate on particle board runs around five pounds per square foot, so call it 100 pounds for 20 square feet. Solid surface at four and a half pounds is about 90 pounds, essentially a wash. Two centimeter quartz at roughly twelve pounds per square foot is 240 pounds, a net gain of about 140 pounds. Three centimeter material is worse than that.

One hundred forty pounds does not sound like much until you look at a coach with 1,500 pounds of capacity that already carries full water, a generator, tools, and two people. It is also 140 pounds added well above the floor line on one side of the vehicle. We are not telling you to avoid stone. We are telling you to weigh the top before you buy it and to know what it costs you in gear you can no longer carry.

## Templating Around a Curved Slide Wall

Nothing in a coach is square. The galley wall usually bows outward slightly, the slide out wall has a radius where it meets the floor or the ceiling, and the cabinet boxes underneath are rarely parallel to each other. A countertop cut from a drawing will not fit. We template the actual opening with thin material or a digital template, scribe the wall contour into that template, and cut the finished piece to it.

On a slide out galley there is an extra constraint: the top has to clear the opening when the slide retracts. A backsplash a quarter inch too tall or an edge overhanging a half inch too far will catch on the sidewall or the slide seal every single time the room comes in. We check retract clearance with the template in place before any material is cut, because a fabricated stone top that does not clear is not something you adjust afterward.

Templating adds hours, and it is the step that separates a top that looks factory from one with a caulk line filling a gap. Expect us to have the coach for a day early in the process for templating, then again when the material arrives for fitting and installation. On solid surface and stone we template, send the template out for fabrication, and schedule the install once the finished piece is back and verified against the opening.

## Cutouts, Sinks, and Reusing Your Existing Fixtures

Most owners want to keep their sink and cooktop, and usually that works. A drop in sink with a rolled rim is straightforward to reuse in any material. An undermount sink is only practical in solid surface or stone, because laminate and butcher block do not present a finished edge at the cutout. If your existing sink is a drop in and you want an undermount look, that is a new sink and it changes the cutout dimensions and the fabrication cost.

Cooktops are usually a drop in unit with a template supplied by the manufacturer, and reusing yours is normal. Two things get checked. First, the cutout clearance to combustible material around the burner box. Second, whether the glass cover hinge still clears a thicker top. Going from a three quarter inch laminate top to a stone top changes the depth the unit sits at, and on some units that means the cover no longer closes flush against the surround.

Plumbing and gas connections get broken and remade during the job. That is a good moment to replace a tired faucet, a corroded supply line, or a sink drain assembly, because the labor is already happening and the access is already open. It is also the moment when a small leak that has been quietly wetting the cabinet floor finally shows itself, so do not be surprised if we call you about cabinet bottom repair once the sink is out.

Edge profile is mostly appearance, with one practical note. A square or eased edge reads modern and is the least likely to chip on a stone top. Bullnose and ogee profiles cost more because they take fabrication time. On solid surface we can build the edge up so it looks like a thicker slab without carrying the weight of one, which is a useful trick in a coach where every pound counts. On laminate the edge is a self edge, a wood band, or a rolled front.

Seams matter more in a vehicle than in a house. A coach flexes constantly, so a seam placed in the middle of an unsupported span will eventually telegraph or crack. We place seams over a cabinet partition or a support member, never over an open span or an appliance void, and we use an adhesive with the right flexibility for the material. On solid surface a properly placed seam is nearly invisible, and it stays that way through years of road miles.

Support is the part owners never think about. RV cabinet boxes are light, often quarter inch or half inch panels, sized to hold a top that weighs a fifth of what stone weighs. When we install a heavier material we add cleats along the walls, rails sistered across the cabinet tops, and sometimes a full plywood deck under the entire run to spread the load. That work is written into the estimate, and on a stone top it is not optional.

Removal, templating, fitting, support work, cutouts, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, and final installation run about 11 hours. At the body and paint rate of $210 per hour, that is $2,310 in labor before any material touches the coach.

Parts: the fabricated solid surface top is $780, and being over $100 it carries 35 percent markup for $1,053. Seam kit, adhesive, silicone, and edge buildup stock total $90, and parts at or under $100 carry 100 percent markup, so $180. Cleat lumber, rails, and fasteners total $65, marked up to $130. Parts come to $1,363, and sales tax at 7.75 percent on parts and materials adds $105.63. Labor itself is not taxed.

That is $3,778.63 all in, with a 50 percent deposit of $1,889.32 because the job is over $2,000. At the other end of the range, a small dinette top in laminate over plywood might be 5 hours at $210 for $1,050, plus a $145 laminate sheet marked up to $195.75, $70 of substrate marked up to $140, and $40 of contact cement and edge banding marked up to $80. Parts of $415.75 plus $32.22 in tax lands at $1,497.97.

The top of the range is quartz across a galley and a dinette with an undermount sink, a new faucet, added structural support under the run, and a slide wall that needs careful scribing. The bottom is a single laminate top with the drop in sink reused and no support changes. ### Can I put quartz countertops in my RV?

You can, and it looks excellent, but run the weight first. Two centimeter quartz is roughly twelve pounds per square foot and three centimeter is closer to eighteen, against about five for the factory laminate. On a twenty square foot galley that is a net gain of one hundred forty pounds or more, all of it high and on one side. Check the cargo carrying capacity sticker on your coach and subtract what you already carry in water, propane, tools, and people. ### Can you reuse my existing sink and cooktop?

Usually yes. A drop in sink with a rolled rim transfers to any new material without trouble, and most drop in cooktops reuse cleanly with the manufacturer template. Two things get verified. Not durably. Particle board swells as it absorbs water and it does not shrink back when it dries, so the surface stays wavy and the laminate stays lifted. We can reseal the sink rim, clamp and rebond a lifted section, and buy you a season, and we will do that when the timing matters and a trip is coming. But the substrate is compromised and the seam will open again. When you are ready, the fix is a new top on a plywood or moisture resistant substrate, which removes the original failure mode instead of postponing it.

Because nothing in a coach is square, and a top cut from measurements will not fit.
