RV dent removal is a different trade from automotive dent work, because the panel in front of you is usually 0.024 inch aluminum over a wood or aluminum stud wall, not a stamped steel door skin. ## Why Aluminum Siding Does Not Act Like Car Steel

Steel has memory. On a trailer the back side of that sheet is fiberglass batt insulation, one by two furring or aluminum studs on sixteen inch centers, wiring runs, and often the back of a cabinet. Getting a rod or a hand behind the low point means opening the interior wall, which turns a small cosmetic repair into a teardown with trim, paneling, and reassembly labor attached.

## How We Choose Between Pushing, Filling, and Replacing

The first pass is a straightedge and a light. We lay a rule across the dent to read the depth, then rake a light across the panel at a shallow angle to find the edges of the stretch. A dent that is deeper than about a quarter inch, or one that runs across a rivet line or a seam, is almost never a push-and-finish job. A shallow saucer in the middle of a sheet with no torn fasteners usually is.

When we fill, we fill thin. Body filler over aluminum needs a clean, sanded, etched surface and a thin build, because a thick slug of filler on a flexible sheet that expands and contracts in Southern California heat will eventually crack or telegraph a shadow line. If the low spot needs more than about an eighth of an inch of filler to level, we stop and price the sheet replacement instead, because the filled version will look wrong within a season or two.

Sheet replacement means cutting the damaged siding at the nearest natural break, usually a seam or a molding line, drilling out rivets, and installing new siding of the same profile. It costs more in labor and paint than a push and fill, but it is a permanent repair rather than a cosmetic one. ## Dents in Fiberglass Are a Laminate Problem

A fiberglass sidewall is not one material. It is a sandwich: a thin filon or gelcoat skin, an adhesive layer, a foam or luan core, and an inner skin. When something hits it hard enough to leave a visible low spot, the skin rarely stretches the way metal does. Instead the impact crushes the core underneath and breaks the adhesive bond between the skin and that core. What looks like a dent is actually a delamination with a dish in the middle of it.

That changes the repair completely. Pushing on it from behind, even if you could reach it, does nothing useful because the crushed foam will not rebuild itself. The correct sequence is to map the loose area by tapping across the panel and listening for the dull, hollow tone that marks the edge of the debond, then inject resin into the void, clamp or vacuum the skin flat while it cures, and refinish the surface. If the core is crushed rather than merely debonded, that core section has to come out and be replaced.

Owners are often surprised that a smaller-looking mark on a fiberglass wall prices higher than a bigger dent in aluminum. The reason is cure time and clamping time, not material cost. A resin injection repair holds the shop bay for a day or more of clamped cure before anyone can touch the finish, and the paint work on a laminated wall almost always means blending into adjacent panels rather than stopping at a seam.

## Painted Steel Truck Bodies and Fleet Panels

Commercial truck bodies, box vans, and service bodies are a different animal, and in a good way. Steel panels have memory, they are usually thicker than RV siding, and there is often real access behind them through a door opening or an equipment compartment. Paintless dent repair genuinely works on many of these, and a dock rash dent on a painted steel side panel can sometimes be pushed out and polished with no refinishing at all.

Where it gets more involved is when the paint has cracked or the metal has creased over a body line. ## What Makes a Crease Cost Several Times a Round Ding

A round ding is a single low point with metal that moved in one direction. A crease is a fold, and a fold means the metal along that line has been worked, thinned, and stretched along its entire length. You cannot push a fold out. You have to work the metal back along the whole run, and on thin RV siding you usually cannot, which is why a crease so often ends the conversation at sheet replacement instead of repair.

The labor multiplier is straightforward once you see it that way. A four inch round dent might be an hour of metal work and an hour of finishing. A four foot crease running diagonally across two sheets means drilling out two rows of rivets, pulling corner and seam molding, removing and replacing both sheets, rebedding the molding in fresh butyl, then refinishing an area large enough to blend. There is also a paint dimension. Small dents in the middle of a panel can often be spot repaired and blended within that panel.
