RV frame straightening is measurement work first and metal work second. A bent tongue after a jackknife, a sagging rail on a 40 foot fifth wheel, or a twisted chassis after a side impact all read very differently on a laser than they do to the eye. We pull factory reference points, compare diagonals, and then decide whether the steel can be pulled, sectioned, or reinforced. ## How We Measure Before We Pull

Nothing gets pulled until we have numbers. We set the unit level on stands, establish a datum plane, and shoot factory reference points with a laser measuring system. On a trailer those points are typically the axle mounting locations, the spring hanger centers, the coupler, and the frame rail ends. On a motorhome chassis they are the manufacturer specified control points along the rails. Everything after that is a comparison against a known reference, not a judgment call.

We record centerline, datum height, and diagonal measurements in a written sheet with the tolerance for each point. Most trailer manufacturers work to about an eighth inch on axle location and a quarter inch on overall diagonal. A rail that is out by three quarters of an inch at the axle is why your trailer eats the inside edge of one tire. That measurement sheet is what an adjuster reads and what we measure against again when the pull is finished.

The same sheet tells us where the damage actually stopped. Impact energy travels, and a hit at the rear of a long trailer frequently shows up as a twist at the tongue. Measuring only the visibly bent area is how a shop straightens one section and hands back a trailer that still tracks sideways. We measure the whole frame every time, front to back, before we quote anything.

## A Frame and Tongue Damage on Travel Trailers

The A frame is the most commonly damaged structure we see, and jackknifing is the usual cause. Backing at an angle until the tow vehicle contacts the coupler area folds the A frame members inward or upward, and it frequently cracks the welds where those members meet the main rails. The trailer may still tow, which is exactly why owners keep using it, but the coupler is no longer on centerline and the tongue weight distribution has changed.

The other common tongue failure is fatigue rather than impact. Long term overloading of the tongue, a badly adjusted weight distribution hitch, or thousands of miles of rough road cracks welds at the A frame to rail junction. That crack propagates slowly and then the tongue sags noticeably. By the time it is visible, the surrounding metal usually has fatigue damage too, which is why we replace rather than simply reweld.

Repair on an A frame is typically cutting out the damaged members, fitting new channel or angle of matching grade and section, welding to the original rail with proper preparation and joint design, and adding gussets where the manufacturer originally used them. Cost usually lands between $3,000 and $7,000 including recheck and refinish. Where the propane rack, battery box, and jack mount to the A frame, those all get remounted and rewired as part of the job.

## Bent I-Beams, Sag, and Frame Flex on Long Trailers

Long trailers sag, and it is not always from an accident. A 38 to 45 foot fifth wheel with heavy slide rooms carries a lot of unsupported span between the axle group and the rear. Over years, that steel takes a permanent set. You see it as a rear end that sits low, doors that stick, slide rooms that no longer seal at the top, and interior trim that has pulled apart at the ceiling seam.

Frame flex is the same problem in motion. If the rails are undersized for the load or the unit has been consistently overloaded, the frame works up and down over road inputs and eventually cracks, usually near the front of the axle group or at a slide opening where the rail was cut. Cracks at those locations are structural and they get worse quickly. Driving on a cracked main rail is the one thing we tell owners not to do.

Correction depends on how far it has gone. Mild sag can sometimes be corrected with hydraulic pressure and controlled heat, then reinforced. Serious sag or cracking means sectioning out the damaged length and welding in new beam of matching grade, then fishplating the joints. Reinforcement of the full span with additional beam or truss is common on units that sagged from design rather than from an impact, since correcting without reinforcing means it comes back.

## Welded, Bolted, Sectioned, and Fishplated Repairs

Trailer frames are welded steel, so the correct repair on a trailer is almost always welded. Sectioning means cutting out the damaged length of rail and welding in new material of matching grade and section, with the joint placed away from any high stress point such as a spring hanger, a crossmember intersection, or a slide opening. Joint preparation matters, since a poorly beveled butt weld is a stress riser that will crack again on the same road it broke on.

Fishplating is adding a steel plate across a joint or a repaired area to move stress away from the weld and restore section modulus. Done correctly, plates are sized to overlap well past the joint, have rounded corners rather than square ones, and are welded along the sides rather than across the ends. Square cornered plates welded across the end concentrate stress exactly where you were trying to reduce it, and that is a repair we see fail regularly.

Motorhome chassis rails are a different situation. Many chassis makers specify bolted repair, prohibit welding on certain rail sections entirely, and publish repair procedures that dictate plate thickness, fastener grade, and hole placement. We follow the chassis maker documentation rather than trailer practice on those units. Welding where a chassis maker prohibits it can compromise the rail heat treatment and creates a liability nobody wants to own.

## Limits of Heat Straightening on High Strength Steel

Heat straightening works by shrinking metal in a controlled pattern as it cools, and on mild steel with a moderate bend it is an excellent method. Vee heats, strip heats, and line heats applied at the right temperature and location will bring a rail back without adding material. The technique is old, well understood, and when done properly it does not weaken mild steel in any meaningful way.

High strength low alloy steel is a different material and it does not tolerate the same treatment. Many modern trailer frames and most chassis rails use HSLA grades that get their strength from controlled processing rather than from carbon content alone. Overheating past roughly 1200 degrees Fahrenheit permanently drops that strength, and you cannot restore it in the field. The rail looks straight and is measurably weaker than it was before.

That is why we identify the steel before we decide the method. On material we cannot verify, or where the bend is sharp enough that the metal has already been worked past its limit, we section and replace rather than heat. Replacing a section costs more up front than heating one. It also does not hand you a rail that fails somewhere else two seasons later, which is the outcome we are actually trying to avoid.

## When a Frame Is Not Worth Repairing

Some frames are not economically repairable, and we will tell you that before you spend money finding out. The clearest case is a trailer where the frame has cracked in multiple locations from fatigue rather than from a single impact. Fatigue cracking in several spots means the whole structure has been cycled past its limit, and repairing three cracks generally buys you a fourth crack somewhere new within a year or two.

The second case is severe twist. A frame that is out of plane, meaning the rails are not just bent but rotated relative to each other, transmits that twist into the coach body above it. Even if we correct the steel, the box that was built on it has already racked, so doors, windows, and slide openings have all been distorted. Correcting both frame and body on an older unit routinely exceeds what the unit is worth.

Third is a repair cost that runs past roughly half the vehicle value on a unit with an actual cash value policy, since the carrier will likely total it anyway. These get talked about as if they are the same thing and they are not. A travel trailer or fifth wheel frame is built by the coach builder or a frame supplier as a welded assembly of I-beams, channel, and tube, sized for the specific floor plan. It carries the box, the axles, and the tanks. Repair practice on it is welding practice, and repair authority sits with the coach builder or the frame supplier documentation.

A motorhome chassis is built by a chassis manufacturer as a rolling platform with steering, brakes, suspension, and drivetrain already attached. The coach builder buys it and builds a body on top. The rails are engineered as part of a vehicle system with published repair procedures, prohibited weld zones, and specified bolted repair methods. Repair authority sits with the chassis manufacturer, and their documentation overrides anything the coach builder says about the rails.

The practical result is different cost structures and different timelines. Trailer frame work is our own welding and fabrication, so we control the schedule.
