The reason rv gelcoat restoration exists as a service is that oxidation is a material failure, not a cleaning problem. UV breaks down the resin binder at the surface of the gelcoat, releasing pigment and filler as loose chalk that comes off on your hand. No soap removes it, and wax only glues it down for a few weeks. ## Oxidation Is Dead Gelcoat, Not Dirt

Ultraviolet light attacks the resin that binds the pigment and filler together, and as that binder degrades at the surface, the pigment and filler are left loose. That loose material is the chalk. It scatters light in every direction, which is why an oxidized panel looks flat, faded, and lighter than its original color.

The easy test is a wet rag. Wipe an oxidized panel with water and it looks almost new for as long as the surface stays wet, because the water fills the microscopic roughness and light reflects properly again. Let it dry and the chalk returns. If a white rag comes away with a matching colored powder on it, you have oxidation rather than staining. Wax will fill that roughness for a few weeks, and then the chalk comes right back through.

Restoration is mechanical. You remove the dead layer to expose the sound, unoxidized gelcoat underneath, then progressively refine the scratches you introduced doing that until the surface reflects cleanly again. There is no chemical shortcut. The products sold as one step oxidation removers are abrasive compounds, and they work the same way, just less controllably. The reason it takes real hours is that every step only removes the scratch left by the previous step.

Light oxidation may not need sanding at all and can go straight to a cutting compound. Starting too coarse removes gelcoat you cannot put back. Starting too fine means you spend hours and never actually cut through the dead layer.

From there the progression matters more than any individual step. Each grit exists only to remove the scratch pattern left by the grit before it, so skipping more than one step leaves scratches the later steps cannot reach. A typical sequence is 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, then 3000. The surface stays flooded with water the entire time so the paper does not load up and drag, and we change paper often, because worn paper stops cutting and starts burnishing.

Edges and high spots need constant attention. Gelcoat is thinnest where the mold surface was steepest and on every raised body line, corner, and radius, and those are the exact places a machine wants to concentrate pressure. We hand sand edges and radii, keep the machine flat on the panel, and check our progress frequently under strong raking light. Burning through gelcoat on a body line takes about four seconds and cannot be undone with any amount of polishing.

## Compound and Polish Stages Explained

Compounding is the cutting stage. A coarse abrasive on a wool or microfiber cutting pad removes the 3000 grit scratch pattern and starts producing gloss. Machine speed and pressure are controlled deliberately, because a rotary spinning too fast builds heat, and heat on polyester gelcoat causes the abrasive to break down early and can distort a thin panel. We keep panel temperature in check by hand, work in sections roughly two feet square, and stop while the compound is still cutting rather than letting it dry out on the surface.

Polishing is the refining stage. A finer abrasive on a softer foam pad removes the haze and the fine circular marks that compounding leaves behind. On dark colors this stage is where holograms show up if the technique is wrong, so the final passes go slower with lighter pressure and a clean pad. Pads get swapped or cleaned constantly, because a pad loaded with spent abrasive and removed gelcoat stops refining and starts putting its own marks into the surface.

Then the surface gets inspected honestly. Polishing oils fill fine scratches and make almost any surface look perfect while they are still on it, which is how a marginal job passes a walk around. We wipe the panel with an alcohol solution to strip those oils and look at it again under strong light from multiple angles. What is still visible after that wipe is what you will be looking at in a month, and if it needs another polish pass, it gets one.

## Measuring What Gelcoat Is Left

Gelcoat is a consumable. A molded panel starts at 15 to 25 mils, but flat laminated sheet used on many sidewalls carries a much thinner surface layer, sometimes only a few mils. Every aggressive restoration removes somewhere between half a mil and a mil and a half. A coach that has been cut hard three times over twenty years may simply not have enough material left to cut a fourth time, no matter how carefully the work is done, and that is a conversation worth having before any money is spent.

We measure rather than guess. The magnetic and eddy current gauges used on steel and aluminum vehicle panels do not read fiberglass, so we use an ultrasonic gauge that reads coating thickness on composite substrate. We take readings across the coach and pay particular attention to the places that always read low: high spots, body lines, corners, radii, and any area that has been polished repeatedly in the past because it was the most visible part of the coach.

Burn-through is permanent. When the gelcoat is cut through, what shows is the laminate underneath, usually as a dull patch with a slight color shift that will not shine no matter what is applied to it. It cannot be polished back and it cannot be filled. The fix is refinishing that area with paint, which is body and paint work at $210 per hour rather than detail work at $95. Avoiding burn-through is the whole reason we measure first and hand work every edge.

Crazing across large areas means the surface layer is cracked, not just oxidized, and polishing crazed gelcoat only makes the cracks more visible. Previous burn-throughs, mismatched patch repairs, and a thin factory coat on laminated sheet all point the same direction. So does a gauge reading that leaves no room to cut.

Rather than argue about it, we test. We cut and polish a two foot square section in a representative area, then bring you out to look at it in daylight. If that panel comes back to real gloss, restoration is the right call and we quote the whole coach. If it comes back dull, blotchy, or hazy, you have seen the best available result with your own eyes and we can talk about paint as an informed decision instead of a sales pitch.

## Sealing After Restoration and the Southern California UV Load

Freshly restored gelcoat is bare and has no UV protection whatsoever, and it will begin oxidizing again immediately. Sealing happens the same day the polishing is finished, not on the next visit. A polymer sealant is the least expensive option and typically holds four to eight months. A wax looks excellent and lasts the shortest time. A ceramic coating is the most durable option, generally two to four years on a properly prepared surface, and it is priced separately because prep and application are their own labor.

Southern California is a hard environment for gelcoat.
