RV hail damage repair is the largest single claim most owners ever file, and it almost never looks as bad from the ground as it is from a ladder. A storm that dimples the sidewall has also worked over the roof membrane, the air conditioner shroud, the vent lids, and the refrigerator vent cover. Our job is to map every impact, separate what can be pushed back out from what has to be replaced, and write a claim the adjuster can actually pay.

## How We Map Hail Damage Panel by Panel

The first thing that happens is a wash and a full walk with raking light. Hail dents hide under road film, and a dirty sidewall can conceal half the impacts. We tape the vehicle into zones, front cap, driver side, passenger side, rear cap, and roof, then count dents per panel with a dent light and a marker. That count is what drives the estimate, because a panel with nine dents and a panel with ninety are two entirely different repairs.

We also record dent size, because size decides method. Anything under a nickel with no paint fracture is a candidate for pushing. Anything with a sharp crease, a stretched center, or cracked gelcoat is not. ## Aluminum Siding, Fiberglass, and Roof Membrane React Differently

Aluminum siding is thin, commonly in the range of 0.024 to 0.032 inch, either bonded to a substrate or hung on framing. It dents easily and it holds the dent, because there is almost no spring back in coil stock that thin. On a hung panel with backside access, a trained hand can massage a lot of that out. On a laminated wall where the aluminum is glued to foam and luan, there is nothing to push against, and pushing anyway delaminates the panel.

Fiberglass does not dent, it fractures. A filon skin over foam takes hail as star cracks, spider webbing in the gelcoat, and pressure bruises where the laminate separated from the core. You often cannot see the bruise until the sun heats the wall and it telegraphs through. Fiberglass damage is repaired with grinding, laminate work, filler, and paint, or the damaged section is cut out and replaced. There is no version where it gets pushed back into shape.

The roof membrane is the part owners forget entirely. EPDM and TPO over thin decking will take a hail hit as a bruise in the wood with the membrane still intact, which reads as no damage from the ladder and shows up later as a soft spot underfoot. Punctures happen too, usually where the membrane crosses a seam or passes over a screw head. A bruised roof deck is a roof job, not a patch.

## Where Paintless Dent Repair Stops Working on RV Panels

Paintless dent repair works on automotive sheet steel because there is a backside to reach, a metal that returns when it is worked, and a factory paint film flexible enough to survive the move. RV panels usually fail at least one of those three tests. Bonded sidewalls have no access. Aluminum with a hard coil coating cracks the finish when it stretches. Fiberglass has no memory at all. That is why a body shop quote written for a car does not translate to a coach.

Where it does work, it is absolutely worth doing. A hung aluminum panel on an older trailer, dents under an inch, no paint fracture, and service access through an interior cabinet or a removable molding is a real candidate. Done well it keeps the original finish and skips paint entirely, which is where the hours pile up on a hail estimate. We will always try the cheaper method first if the panel construction supports it.

The honest limit is roughly this. Once a panel needs more than about six hours of pushing, or once the finish cracks anywhere along the worked area, replacement plus paint is usually cheaper and always looks better from ten feet. We would rather tell you that in the estimate than bill eight hours of pushing and then replace the panel anyway.

Shrouds are also model specific and can be slow to source, so we check them on every hail vehicle before anything else gets ordered.

Vent lids go next. A 14 by 14 lid is thin polypropylene or acrylic and it shatters or stars under hail. Owners look up at the ceiling from inside, see no water, and assume it is fine. A lid can be cracked through and still shed most of the rain for months until a gasket or a hinge ear lets go. Refrigerator vent covers, plumbing vent caps, and antenna heads take the same beating and get inspected the same way.

Then there is everything sitting on the roof that is not the roof itself: solar panel glass, television antenna, satellite dome, roof ladder standoffs, and the sealant beds around every one of them. Hail cracks sealant. Cracked sealant is a leak with a delay on it.
