RV paint correction and polishing is a subtractive process, which is the single most important thing an owner should understand about it. We are not adding gloss, we are removing a few microns of clear coat so the surface becomes flat again and reflects light cleanly. That is why measuring before cutting matters, and why an honest shop will tell you when a defect is too deep. Westminster owners with older coaches get a thickness map before we quote hours.

## What Correction Removes and What It Cannot

Correction levels the clear coat. Anything sitting inside that clear layer as a scratch, haze, or etched pit can be removed by taking the surrounding surface down to the bottom of the defect. Swirl marks from automatic washes and dirty wash mitts, marring from improper drying, light oxidation from ultraviolet exposure, and the mineral etch left when sprinkler water dries on a hot panel all fall into that category.

What correction cannot touch is anything that went through the clear. If a scratch has broken into the base color, no amount of polishing brings the color back, because the color is gone at that point. The same is true of clear coat that has already failed and started peeling: polishing a delaminating clear accelerates the failure. Those are refinishing jobs, not detail jobs, and we will say so.

Gelcoat is a separate case. Many RV sidewalls are pigmented gelcoat rather than painted clear coat, and gelcoat oxidizes far more aggressively. It also has more material to work with, so heavier compounding is often appropriate. The technique is related but the products and the risk profile are different, which is why we identify the surface type before quoting anything.

## Measuring Clear Coat Thickness Before Cutting

Before any abrasive touches your coach, we take film thickness readings across the vehicle with a paint gauge. On steel or aluminum sections the readings are direct. On fiberglass and composite panels we use gauges rated for non-conductive substrates and interpret the numbers relative to each other rather than as absolutes. What we are looking for is variation: thin areas from a previous polish, spots where a prior repair left less material, and edges where clear is always thinnest.

Those readings become a map, and the map determines the plan. An area reading well below the surrounding surface gets a lighter approach or gets left alone entirely. Edges, corners, and raised body lines get taped off or hand polished with a soft pad because that is where a machine burns through first. On a coach that has already been polished twice by a previous owner, this step frequently changes the recommendation from multi-step to single-step.

Skipping the measurement is how coaches get burned through. Once a machine cuts through clear into base, the only repair is refinishing that panel and blending it, which turns an $95 per hour detail job into a $210 per hour paint job on a large panel with no natural break line to stop at. The twenty to forty minutes spent taking readings is the cheapest insurance on the entire project, and we record the numbers so the next technician who works on your coach has the same information we did.

## One-Step Versus Multi-Step Correction

A one-step uses a single combination pad and polish that cuts moderately and finishes cleanly in the same pass. It typically removes 50 to 70 percent of visible defects and dramatically improves gloss. On a coach with light swirling, a limited clear coat budget, or an owner who wants the best result per dollar rather than perfection, this is usually the right call. On a 38 foot coach a one-step is often 15 to 22 hours.

A multi-step separates the work. A compounding pass with an aggressive pad and abrasive removes the defects, then a polishing pass with a finer combination refines the surface and removes the haze the compound left behind. Some jobs need a third finishing pass on dark colors where compound haze shows. Multi-step gets you to 85 to 95 percent defect removal and it roughly doubles the hours.

We recommend based on the thickness readings and on how you use the coach. If the vehicle lives outdoors and gets washed at a truck wash, spending forty hours chasing perfection is money that will be undone within a season. If it is stored covered and hand washed, and especially if a coating is going on afterward, the multi-step is worth it because the result will still be there in three years.

## Detail Labor at $95 Per Hour and Where It Goes

Detail work bills at $95 per hour, which is well below our body and paint rate because it is a different skill set and does not occupy a spray booth. That rate covers the technician, the machines, the pads, and the compounds. It is straightforward hourly work with no material surcharge, so the estimate is essentially an hour count and you can check our math.

The hours break down predictably. Decontamination comes first: a chemical wash, an iron remover to dissolve embedded metal particles, and a clay treatment to pull bonded contamination out of the surface. Skipping that means dragging grit around under a polishing pad, which creates new scratches while you are trying to remove old ones. Decontamination alone is typically three to six hours on a large coach.

Then comes the correction itself, panel by panel, with test sections done first to confirm the pad and abrasive combination is producing the result we want without excessive cutting. After correction, the surface is wiped with a panel prep solvent to strip polishing oils so we can see the true result rather than a temporarily filled one. Final inspection under multiple light sources catches what shop fluorescents hide.

## Why a 38 Foot Coach Runs 20 to 40 Hours

A 38 foot Class A has roughly 900 square feet of exterior surface between the sidewalls, the caps, and the compartment doors, plus a roof if it is a painted fiberglass cap. A polisher covers a two foot by two foot section at a time, and each section needs multiple slow passes under controlled pressure. Do that arithmetic across 900 square feet with two or three passes per section and the hour count is not padding, it is geometry.

Height adds time. Working the upper walls means a lift or scaffolding, and every reposition costs minutes that add up across a full vehicle. Awning rails, rub rails, clearance lights, and compartment door edges all have to be taped or hand worked because a machine pad will burn an edge instantly. Coaches with heavy trim take noticeably longer than clean slab-sided units.

Condition drives the rest. A three year old coach that has been hand washed might be 18 hours for a one-step. A twelve year old coach stored outdoors with chalked gelcoat and heavy water spotting can be 40 hours or more for a two-step, and that is before deciding whether the roof gets included. We quote after walking the vehicle and taking readings, never from photographs alone.

## Correction Is the Required Prep for Any Coating

A ceramic coating is optically clear and permanent enough that whatever is under it stays under it. Apply a coating over a swirled, hazy surface and you have just locked in those swirls for the service life of the coating. Removing them afterward means abrading off the coating you paid for and starting over. This is the most common expensive mistake we see on coaches that were coated elsewhere.

That is why our coating quotes always include a correction line. On a newer coach in good condition that might be a light one-step of 12 to 18 hours. On an older unit it is a full multi-step and it will be the majority of the invoice. Owners sometimes ask to skip correction and just coat it. We will not do that, because the result reflects on the shop and the owner is unhappy within a month.

The sequence after correction matters too. The surface has to be stripped of all polishing oils with a dedicated panel prep solvent so the coating bonds to bare clear coat rather than to residue. Any silicone or wax left behind is a bond failure waiting to happen, showing up as patchy water behavior a few weeks later. That wipe-down is also the last honest look at the paint, because polishing oils temporarily fill fine scratches and make a surface look better than it is. Stripping them reveals whether the correction actually finished.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many times can an RV be polished before it runs out of clear?

There is no universal number, which is exactly why we measure. A factory clear coat might be 40 to 60 microns, and a moderate correction removes somewhere between 2 and 8 microns depending on how aggressive the pad and abrasive are. That suggests several corrections over a vehicle lifetime, but previous work by other shops, thin areas from original application, and edges all reduce the real budget. Taking readings across the vehicle before starting is how we decide whether you get an aggressive correction or a conservative one.

### Can polishing remove a scratch I can feel with my fingernail?

Usually not safely. The old rule holds: if your fingernail catches in the scratch, it has likely gone through most or all of the clear, and removing it would mean leveling the surrounding clear down to the bottom of the groove. That would take more material than the panel can spare. Scratches that catch a fingernail are refinishing work, either a spot repair with blending or a panel refinish. Scratches you can see but not feel are exactly what correction is designed to remove.

### What causes the swirl marks all over my coach?

Almost always washing. Automatic truck washes with rotating brushes are the biggest offender, followed by wash mitts that were dropped or reused without rinsing, single-bucket washing that recirculates grit back onto the paint, and drying with a towel on a surface that was not fully rinsed. Ultraviolet exposure and oxidation contribute a general dullness but the fine spiderweb pattern you see under direct sun is mechanical. Changing wash technique after a correction is what determines whether the result lasts one season or five.

### How long does a correction last?

The correction itself is permanent, in that the removed defects do not come back. What matters is how fast new ones appear. A coach that is hand washed with a two-bucket method, dried with clean microfiber, and stored under cover can look corrected for three to five years. The same coach run through a brush wash every month will show new swirling within weeks. Adding a coating after correction helps meaningfully because contamination releases more easily and the wash itself becomes gentler.

### Do you polish gelcoat differently than painted surfaces?

Yes. Gelcoat is a pigmented polyester resin, not a clear layer over color, and it oxidizes much faster in direct sun. The oxidized layer is chalky and has to be cut away, which usually means starting with a more aggressive compound and sometimes wet sanding on badly weathered surfaces. The upside is that gelcoat is thicker than automotive clear, so there is more material to work with. The downside is that it needs ongoing protection afterward or it will chalk again within a year or two.

### Is it worth correcting a coach I plan to sell?

Often yes, and it is one of the better returns in this trade. Correction and polishing on a dull, swirled coach costs a fraction of paint work and changes the first impression completely, which matters when a buyer is standing in a lot comparing two similar units. A one-step correction plus a thorough exterior detail on a 34 footer might be $1,800 to $2,500. We would not recommend a full multi-step correction purely for resale, since the incremental gain is not visible to a casual buyer.

### Can you correct just the sides and skip the roof?

Yes, and many owners do exactly that. The roof is only visible from above and on many coaches it is a rubber or TPO membrane that cannot be polished at all. On units with a painted or gelcoat fiberglass roof cap, correcting it does slow oxidation and reduces the chalky runoff that streaks down the sidewalls after rain. If the budget is limited, sidewalls and caps give you nearly all of the visual benefit. We price them separately so you can decide.

### What is the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polishing is abrasive and removes material to level the surface, which permanently eliminates defects. Waxing is additive and lays a sacrificial layer on top, filling minor imperfections temporarily and adding gloss for a few weeks to a few months. A wax on an uncorrected surface hides swirls until the first few washes strip it. They serve different purposes: correct first to fix the surface, then protect it with a wax, a sealant, or a ceramic coating depending on how long you want the protection to last.
