Choosing an RV paint shop Orange County owners can trust comes down to two boring questions: does the booth actually fit the coach, and does the shop spend the hours on prep. We spray full coaches, spot repairs, and custom graphics at our Westminster facility, and we have been doing it since 2015. Almost everything that goes wrong in RV refinishing traces back to shortcuts taken before the gun ever comes out.

## Booth Capacity for a 45 Foot Coach

Most collision shops cannot paint an RV because the booth is 26 feet long. A 45 foot Class A needs a bay long enough for the unit plus working room at both ends, tall enough to reach the roofline on a lift, and with enough air movement to keep overspray off a surface that large. Our 35,000 square foot facility is built around that constraint, which is why we take diesel pushers, fifth wheels, and box trucks that get turned away elsewhere.

Airflow matters more than length alone. On a coach you are spraying a continuous surface forty feet long, so the painter has to keep a wet edge moving the whole distance without the first section flashing off before the last one is laid down. That takes downdraft or semi downdraft airflow, controlled temperature, and usually two people working in sequence rather than one painter chasing the panel.

Curing is the other half. Bake cycles run at a controlled temperature for a set time, and a coach holds a lot of thermal mass, so heat soak and cool down both take longer than they do on a car. Rushing a bake schedule on a large unit produces soft film that marks up during reassembly. We schedule the bake, then let the unit sit before anybody touches it.

## Surface Prep Is Most of the Labor

On a full repaint, prep is roughly sixty to seventy percent of the labor. The unit gets washed, degreased, and stripped of every piece of trim, molding, light, badge, and rail that can come off. Old graphics get removed, which on a decal heavy coach is hours of heat gun and eraser wheel work by itself. Then the surface gets sanded, defects get filled and blocked, seams get inspected, and the whole coach is masked.

Any existing failure in the surface has to be corrected first. Peeling clear, chalky oxidized gelcoat, cracked filler from an old repair, and lifting decal edges all telegraph straight through new paint. Sanding through a failing clearcoat and shooting color over it produces a job that looks perfect for six months and then delaminates in sheets. We would rather find that during prep and tell you the number went up.

This is the part owners get sticker shock from, because from the outside it looks like nothing happened. There is no visible progress for two weeks, and then the coach gets sprayed in two days. That is normal and it is the correct order. A shop that quotes a suspiciously low full repaint is not planning to spend those two weeks.

- Remove trim, moldings, lights, badges, awning rails, and ladders

## Single Stage Versus Basecoat Clearcoat

Single stage puts pigment and resin in one film. It is quicker, cheaper, and easy to spot repair later, which is why it still shows up on fleet vehicles, trailers, and solid color commercial units. The tradeoff is durability and depth. Single stage urethane holds up reasonably well but lacks the ultraviolet protection of a dedicated clear layer, so it oxidizes sooner under high sun exposure.

Basecoat clearcoat sprays color first, then two or more coats of clear over it. The clear carries the ultraviolet inhibitors, the gloss, and the sacrificial thickness you can polish later. It is what almost every full coach repaint uses now, and it is what makes metallics, pearls, and multi stage graphics possible, because the color layer no longer has to also be the durable layer. It costs more in both material and paint hours.

Our default recommendation on a coach you plan to keep is basecoat clearcoat with a high solids clear, because the surface area is huge, the sun exposure here is relentless, and the ability to polish out defects later without respraying color is genuinely valuable. On a work trailer that will get scraped anyway, single stage is often the smarter money.

## Adhesion Over Gelcoat, TPO, and ABS

An RV is not one material. The sidewalls may be gelcoated fiberglass or filon, the front and rear caps are usually molded fiberglass, the bumper covers and fender skirts are often TPO or ABS plastic, and the trim and rails are aluminum. Each one needs its own preparation and its own primer or promoter. Spraying the same primer over all of it is the single most common cause of paint failure on an RV.

Gelcoat has to be scuffed thoroughly and cleaned of mold release residue and years of wax and silicone. A dedicated adhesion promoter or an epoxy primer goes down before color. TPO is worse, because it is low surface energy and nothing sticks to it without a flexible adhesion promoter applied to a properly cleaned and activated surface. ABS takes primer more willingly but still needs a flex additive so it does not crack when the panel moves.

We treat those materials as separate substrates in the estimate, and that shows up as extra prep hours and extra material lines. Owners sometimes ask why a plastic bumper costs as much to refinish as a much larger body panel. It is because the bumper needs cleaning, flexing agents, promoter, primer, and its own cure steps that the fiberglass does not.

## Blending a Panel Versus Painting the Whole Coach

Blending means spraying color into an adjacent panel and fading it out, then clearing the whole area to a natural break line so your eye never finds an edge. Done well on a solid color it is invisible. Done on a metallic or a pearl it takes real skill, because flake orientation changes with gun distance, air pressure, and how many coats land inside the fade zone.

Whether blending works depends on how faded the surrounding paint is. A three year old coach blends easily. A twelve year old coach with chalked clear may not blend at all, because the new material is brighter and cleaner than anything you can spray next to it. In that case we either paint the full side to a natural break, or we correct and polish the adjacent panels first so the match has a chance.

This is the conversation we have on nearly every spot repair. Repairing one panel and blending is far cheaper than a full repaint, and it is the right call most of the time. But we will say plainly when a blend is going to show, because a visible blend edge on a $6,000 repair is a worse outcome than spending more up front on a full side.

## What the Paint Supply Charge Actually Covers

Paint supplies bill at $55 per paint hour. That is a standard industry method for charging materials without itemizing every ounce, and on an RV it covers a lot of ground because the surface area is so large. It includes primer, sealer, color, clear, hardeners, reducers, adhesion promoters, and flex additives, plus everything consumed in applying them. Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to those materials. Labor is not taxed, which is why the two are separated on your estimate.

It also covers the consumables that vanish into the job: masking paper and tape, plastic sheeting, tack cloths, mixing cups, strainers, spray gun filters, sandpaper across a dozen grits, buffing pads, compound, and polish. Masking a 40 foot coach uses an amount of paper and film that surprises people the first time they see it laid out on the floor.

The important thing to understand is that the charge scales with paint hours, not with the price of a gallon. A job with more paint hours consumes more material, so the charge tracks the actual work performed. Parts and materials also carry 7.75 percent sales tax while labor is not taxed. ## Color Matching a Faded 12 Year Old Coach

Factory paint codes get you close on a new unit and almost nowhere on an old one. Twelve years of ultraviolet exposure shifts whites toward yellow, drops the chroma out of reds, and dulls metallic flake. If we mix to the original code and spray it next to that panel, it will look wrong in daylight even though it is technically correct.

So we match the coach, not the code. That means pulling a spray out card, tinting toward the aged panel, checking it outdoors in daylight rather than under shop lights, and viewing it from several angles because metallics shift with viewing angle. On a badly faded unit we will sometimes recommend polishing the adjacent panels first, which brings the oxidized surface back closer to its original color and makes a match achievable.

Film thickness matters here too. Color changes with the number of coats, especially on metallics and on light colors over a dark substrate. We spray to a target mil thickness and verify it, because a panel sprayed heavier than the one beside it will read as a different shade even with identical material. Consistency in application is half of color matching.

## Sun Load and How Often a Coach Needs Refinishing

Southern California sun exposure is the main clock on RV paint. A coach stored outdoors year round with no protection typically starts showing clearcoat dulling around year five or six, and visible failure such as chalking or peeling clear somewhere between eight and fifteen years. Roofs and the upper third of the sidewalls go first, because they take the most direct exposure.

Care changes those numbers substantially. A coach that gets washed regularly, waxed or sealed twice a year, and stored under cover can hold a good finish well past fifteen years. A ceramic coating extends it further by giving ultraviolet something sacrificial to attack and by making the surface easier to keep clean, which matters because embedded grit and road film accelerate oxidation.

If your clear is dulling but not failing, paint correction and polishing costs a fraction of a repaint and buys years. If the clear is cracking, peeling, or has been sanded through in spots, polishing will not save it and the panel needs refinishing. We look at it, measure film thickness, and tell you which situation you are in before you spend anything.

### Do you have to strip the gelcoat before painting?

Not usually. Sound gelcoat is a good substrate for paint as long as it is thoroughly scuffed, cleaned of mold release residue, wax, and silicone, and sealed with an epoxy primer or a dedicated adhesion promoter. Stripping only becomes necessary when the gelcoat itself is failing: crazed with cracks, chalked so deeply that sanding will not reach sound material, or already separating from the skin below. Silicone contamination is the quiet job killer here, because years of spray on wax leave residue that causes fisheyes. Proper cleaning before sanding, not after, is what prevents it.

### My clearcoat looks chalky. Do I need a repaint?

Maybe not. If the clear is dull and oxidized but still continuous, paint correction can bring it back. That means a compounding and polishing sequence that removes the dead oxidized surface layer and exposes fresh clear underneath, with the polishing portion billing at $95 per hour detail labor. It buys years on a finish. If the clear is cracking, flaking, peeling at the edges, or has already been sanded through in places, there is not enough film left to correct and refinishing is the only real answer. We measure film thickness and run a test section before recommending either.

### Can you paint the plastic bumper and caps to match the body?

Yes, and it takes different preparation than the fiberglass. Bumper covers and fender skirts are typically TPO or ABS, low surface energy plastics that reject ordinary primer. They get cleaned thoroughly, surface activated, and coated with a flexible adhesion promoter before primer. A flex additive goes into the color and clear so the finish moves with the panel instead of cracking. Molded fiberglass caps get scuffed and epoxy primed like the sidewalls. Because plastic needs extra steps and extra cure time, a small bumper can carry as many labor hours as a much larger body panel.

### Is paint correction a substitute for repainting?

It is a substitute only when the existing clearcoat still has usable thickness. Correction removes a few microns of oxidized surface and restores gloss, and on a five to ten year old coach with dull but intact clear it produces a dramatic result for a fraction of a repaint. It cannot add film, fix cracking, or repair anything that has already flaked. We measure film thickness and run a test section before recommending it, because polishing paint that is already thin can cut through the clear and force the repaint you were trying to avoid.
