RV panel replacement is one of those jobs where the damaged area is the small part of the bill. The bad news is that you cannot get one sheet out without releasing the trim that holds it, and that trim usually runs the full length of the side.

The sequence is straightforward but not quick. Remove exterior lights, vents, and any accessory bolted through the wall in the work area. Pull the seam and corner molding, cutting old butyl loose as you go without gouging the sheets you are keeping. Drill out the rivets along the studs. Slide the damaged sheet out, inspect the framing and insulation behind it for water damage, then dry fit the replacement and set new rivets on fresh layout.

Behind-the-sheet inspection is the part that changes estimates. If the studs are dark and soft, or the insulation is packed down and damp, you have a water intrusion history that has to be dealt with before the new panel goes on. ## Filon and Laminated Sidewall Sections

Filon is a fiberglass reinforced panel that comes in smooth or pebbled finish and is bonded to a foam or luan core as part of a laminated wall. It is not a skin you peel off. The wall was built as a sandwich in a press at the factory, and repairing it means cutting a section of the sandwich out, building the core back to the exact same thickness, and bonding a new skin section in with structural adhesive under even clamping pressure.

Thickness discipline matters more here than anywhere else in the job. If the new core is a sixteenth of an inch proud or shy of the original, that step telegraphs through the skin and shows in reflection along the whole side. We shim, we clamp, and we check with a long straightedge before the adhesive kicks. On larger sections we build a caul board and clamp across the full patch so the panel cures against a flat reference rather than against whatever the wall wanted to do.

There is also a seam question. On aluminum you have natural breaks at every molding line. On a laminated wall the exterior is one continuous surface, so the repair edge is wherever we cut it. That means the finish work has to hide a joint that has no natural home, and the blend usually runs from the repair out to the nearest real break such as a slide opening, a body line, or the corner.

## Trim Removal and Rebedding the Seams

Every piece of molding you remove is a piece of molding that has to be rebedded correctly. Old butyl tape does not get reused. It gets scraped off both surfaces, the substrate gets cleaned with solvent, and a new run of butyl goes down before the trim is set and the screws are driven to an even snug rather than crushed.
