These leak right now, and they leak in a specific spot you can usually find with a hose test and a helper inside with a flashlight. Chalky white residue, cracking along the flex point, and a seal that squeaks against the room are all late stage signs.

There is also the seal that is fine but the room is not. If the slide is racked, one corner will crush its seal flat while the opposite corner barely touches, so you get a run that looks half worn out and half new on the same edge. Old adhesive has to come off entirely, the substrate has to be cleaned with the right solvent and then primed, and the surface has to be above roughly sixty degrees when the tape goes down.

Channel mounted stock uses a barbed or T shaped base that presses into an extruded retainer, usually aluminum, that is screwed to the coach. It is more durable and it is easier to service later because you pull the old profile out and push a new one in. The catch is that the retainer itself has to be straight and undamaged. Bent retainers from a racked room or a road strike have to be replaced before new stock will seat.

We keep both styles on hand and we match what the coach was built with unless there is a specific reason to convert, such as a flange that has been damaged and no longer supports tape. Mixing profiles at a corner is where most owner installed seal jobs start leaking, because the seal heights do not match and the molded corner cannot bridge the difference. The gap is often small enough that it looks fine from six feet away and still passes water in a side wind. Match the profile or replace the whole run.

## Pulling or Supporting the Room to Get the Seal On

Some seal runs are accessible with the room extended and the coach level. The exterior wiper on the top edge, the vertical wipers on the sides, and the exterior bulb on the flange usually come out this way. That is the cheaper version of the job, and on a well behaved coach it is a few hours per side plus cleanup.

If a single run is torn from a road strike or a tree branch and the rest of the set still passes the thumb test and shows no chalking, replace the damaged run and keep the rest. The reason we push this so hard is what a failed top wiper does. Water that gets past the top edge does not drip onto the floor where you would see it. It runs down the inside face of the slide flange, wicks into the plywood or lauan at the leading edge of the slide floor, and rots the structure from the inside out.
