Commercial truck driveline repair starts with a road test, because a vibration that shows up at 45 miles per hour unloaded is a different failure than one that only appears loaded at 65. U joints, center support bearings, slip yokes, driveline angles, and differential bearings all sound similar from the driver seat and cost very different amounts to fix. ## Reading a Driveline Vibration by Speed and Load

A vibration has a signature, and the signature tells us where to look before anything comes apart. Driveshaft vibration is speed sensitive and largely load independent. It shows up at a specific road speed, gets worse as speed climbs, and does not change much whether you are coasting or pulling. Tire and wheel vibration is also speed sensitive but usually smoother and felt through the steering rather than the floor. Engine and converter vibration tracks engine speed, not road speed, and changes the moment you shift.

So we drive it. We note the speed where it starts, whether it comes in under power or on deceleration, whether it changes in neutral at the same road speed, and whether it goes away in a different gear at the same speed. A vibration that appears only under load and disappears when coasting points at driveline angle or a worn u joint loading up. A vibration that is identical loaded and coasting points at balance or a bent shaft.

Only after that do we get it in the air. On the lift we check radial looseness at every joint, rotate the shaft to feel for a rough cup, grab the center support and look for rubber that has separated from the bracket, and pull the slip yoke to check for spline wear and a worn seal. Ten minutes of road test saves two hours of throwing parts at a truck.

A joint gets rough when the needle bearings brinell into the cross trunnion, usually because grease was never pushed in or because the joint has no grease fitting at all. The first symptom is a clunk when you go from drive to reverse or when you lift off the throttle. The last symptom is the shaft coming loose and taking out a brake line, a fuel line, or the floor.

Center support bearings on two piece shafts fail differently. The bearing itself survives a long time, but the rubber isolator that carries it hardens, cracks, and separates from the steel bracket. The shaft then runs off center and hammers. On a van or box truck that lives at sustained road speed all day, we expect to see this somewhere past 120,000 miles, and it usually comes with a growl that increases with road speed and never changes with gear selection.

Slip yoke wear is the quiet one. The splines wear, the yoke ratchets slightly under torque changes, and you get a clunk that owners often blame on the transmission. We measure spline looseness and check the yoke seal, because a leaking seal on the tail housing both starves the transmission and lets grit into the splines. When we replace a shaft component, we mark the shaft clocking before disassembly and balance it after, since reassembling a shaft 180 degrees out builds a vibration that was not there before.

Change ride height with a lift, a heavier spring pack, an air bag setup, or a body build that alters rear ride height, and those angles no longer cancel.

The symptom is a vibration that arrived right after suspension work, that is worse under power, and that changes with load in the back. On a leaf sprung chassis we correct it by rotating the pinion with tapered shims or by re-clocking the spring perches. On air ride we set ride height first, then measure. Measuring means an angle finder on the transmission output, on the shaft, and on the pinion, with the vehicle at its normal loaded stance rather than empty on the lift.

There is also shaft length to consider. Lift a chassis and the slip yoke pulls further out of the tail housing, which reduces spline engagement and can let the yoke bottom out on suspension compression. If a build has gone far enough that the yoke rides near the end of its travel, the honest fix is a longer shaft, not more shims. We will measure it and tell you which one you are actually looking at.

## Differential Noise Versus Wheel Bearing Noise

Differential noise and wheel bearing noise get confused constantly, and the two repairs are an order of magnitude apart in cost. A wheel bearing growls, and the growl changes when you load the bearing by swerving gently side to side in an empty lot. A differential howls, and the pitch changes between accelerating and coasting at the same road speed, because the ring and pinion mesh loads differently in each direction.

A gear whine that appears on acceleration and disappears on coast usually means the pinion is riding deep in the ring gear. Whine on coast and quiet on power points the other way. Whine in both directions is often worn pinion bearings letting the pinion move under load. A rhythmic clunk that scales with road speed and can be felt through the floor is more likely a chipped tooth or a spider gear problem, and that one should not be driven on.

We pull the cover, look at the fluid for glitter and chunks, read the wear pattern on the ring gear teeth, and check pinion preload and backlash before quoting. Sometimes the answer is a fluid change and a new pinion seal. Sometimes it is a full rebuild with a ring and pinion set, and on a high mileage fleet truck it is worth pricing a good reman third member against a rebuild, because the labor is similar and the parts cost is not.

Transmission fluid on a heavy chassis is a wear item with a short life if the truck actually works. Heat is what kills it. Every time fluid runs past roughly 200 degrees for a sustained period, its useful life is cut about in half. A cutaway chassis motorhome climbing a long grade loaded, or a box truck running stop and go all day through Orange County, generates far more heat than the mileage number on the odometer suggests.

We read the fluid rather than the odometer. Fresh fluid is bright and clear. Fluid that is dark brown with a burnt smell has already oxidized and has been depositing varnish on valve body bores and clutch packs. Fluid with fine friction material suspended in it means the clutches are shedding. On a working truck we like a drain, filter, and refill every 30,000 miles, and an added external cooler if the chassis runs hot under load.

Cooler lines are the quiet failure. Factory lines run steel to rubber to steel, and the rubber sections harden and seep at the crimps. A line that lets go while towing dumps the fluid and the transmission is finished in under a mile. When we service a heavy chassis we inspect every foot of the cooler circuit, flush the cooler itself so new fluid does not immediately pick up old debris, and replace suspect hose sections while the truck is already in the air.

Torque converter shudder feels like driving over rumble strips at light throttle around 40 to 55 miles per hour. It is the lockup clutch slipping and grabbing rather than holding. On some chassis a proper fluid exchange with the correct specification fluid resolves it. On others the clutch lining is already gone and the converter comes out, which means the transmission comes out with it. We test lockup behavior with a scan tool before deciding which conversation we are having.
