The panel itself is thin, so it fails early and it fails visibly. What matters is what sits behind it: wet insulation, swollen framing, and a seam that is still letting water in. ## What Your Walls and Ceilings Are Actually Made Of

Most RV sidewalls are a laminated sandwich. Outside is fiberglass or aluminum, then a layer of rigid foam, then the framing, then the interior panel. That interior panel is usually luan plywood about an eighth of an inch thick with a printed vinyl paper bonded to the face. The pattern you see is ink on paper, not wood grain. Ceilings are built the same way, often with a soft foam backed headliner stretched over the luan instead of a printed face.

That construction is light, which is the whole point, but it has almost no tolerance for moisture. Once water reaches the luan the glue line lets go, the paper face bubbles, and the panel loses its stiffness. You can usually feel it before you see it. Press on the wall with your palm and a healthy panel feels solid against the foam behind it. A failed one feels soft, or it moves and makes a faint crackling sound as the laminate separates.

The other thing to understand is that the interior panel is doing structural work in a small way. On a laminated wall the whole sandwich carries load together. Cutting a large opening in the inner skin without a plan for supporting the edges can leave you with a wall that flexes on the road. That is why we rarely cut a random rectangle. We plan the cut to land on framing or on a seam where a batten will finish it cleanly.

## Why the Same Stain Keeps Coming Back

We have pulled ceiling panels where the stain sat over the dinette and the failed sealant was at a vent flange six feet away. Priming over the stain without finding that entry point is exactly why owners see it return within one wet season.

Common entry points on a coach are the roof to sidewall seam, vent and skylight flanges, the awning rail, marker lights, the refrigerator vent, and any screw someone added after the coach left the factory. Sealant has a service life. Lap sealant on a roof seam is generally good for a few years before it cracks, and self leveling product around a flange can pull away from the flange edge while it still looks fine from the ground.

So the sequence we follow is find, stop, dry, then rebuild. We water test with a hose and, when the path is not obvious, we open a small inspection hole and look at the framing with a moisture meter and a borescope. Opening a wall once costs less than opening it twice. If the source is still live and we close the wall anyway, the new panel is on the same countdown the old one was on.

## Sagging Headliners and Ceiling Drop

There are two very different failures that both look like a sagging ceiling. In the first, the headliner fabric has separated from its foam backing and hangs in a soft droop, usually starting near the front cap or over a vent. That is a fabric problem and it does not mean the ceiling is wet. In the second, the luan itself has lost its bond to the roof structure and the panel has dropped between the rafters. That one is almost always water.

You can tell them apart by touch. A fabric failure moves loosely and the panel behind it is still firm when you push up on it. A panel failure feels spongy and the sag follows the rafter spacing in a repeating pattern. If you see fasteners or trim pieces starting to pull through the ceiling material, the panel is carrying weight it can no longer carry, and we treat that as a water job until the moisture readings prove otherwise.

Fabric only failures are the cheaper repair. We pull the trim, remove the old headliner, clean the substrate, and bond new foam backed material in place. Panel failures mean cutting out the wet luan, replacing insulation, and installing new board with adhesive plus mechanical fasteners hidden under trim. On a ceiling we also work around wiring runs, air conditioner ducting, vent frames, and speaker cutouts, and that is where most of the hours go.

We check the usual RV interior suppliers first, because sometimes a pattern is still stocked under a different name, and that phone call is worth making before we start designing around the problem.

When the pattern is truly gone, you have three honest choices. Match close and accept a visible difference in a low traffic area. Break the repair at a natural line, such as a corner, a cabinet edge, or a window frame, so the eye reads it as a design change instead of a patch. Or reskin a whole wall or a whole room in a current pattern so everything matches itself, which costs more up front and looks intentional when it is done.

We hold samples against your existing wall in daylight before we commit. Printed patterns shift with sun exposure, so a fresh sheet of the original pattern can still look wrong next to twelve year old board that has faded on the curbside. Some owners choose to paint the wallboard instead. That works when the panel is prepped and sealed properly, and it removes the matching problem entirely, but it is a different look and it is not reversible.

Seam battens are the honest version of that same idea. A batten is a thin strip of wood or matching trim installed over the joint between old panel and new. It is not hiding a mistake, it is the technique the factory used at every panel joint in the coach. Run a batten at both ends of a repair, or run matching battens at even spacing down the whole wall, and a patch becomes a detail instead of a scar.

## Insulation, Framing, and What Goes Back In the Wall

Once the panel is off, the wall is open and this is the only inexpensive moment to fix what is behind it. Wet fiberglass batting does not dry in place and it holds water against the framing. Block foam that has been soaked will usually dry out, but if it is crushed or delaminated from the skins it is no longer doing its job. We pull anything that reads wet on a meter and replace it rather than closing it up and hoping.

Framing gets checked next. Wood framing that has gone soft has to be sistered or replaced. Aluminum framing does not rot, but the screws and the adhesive bond around it corrode and let go, and galvanic corrosion where aluminum meets a steel fastener is common on older coaches. We also look at wiring in the cavity, because water that ran down a stud usually ran past a connection or a staple, and corroded copper inside a closed wall is a problem waiting on you.

Then we rebuild in order: seal the source, replace insulation, restore any framing, run or repair wiring, install the new panel with contact adhesive and hidden fasteners, and finish with trim or battens. Every one of those steps is faster while the wall is already open, which is why we ask owners to authorize the wall work as one job instead of coming back for the wiring in six months.

Body and paint labor bills at $210 per hour, and this job runs about 14 hours of it.

The math: 14 hours at $210 is $2,940 in labor. Two sheets of vinyl faced ceiling panel at $185 each is $370 in parts, and since each is over $100 the markup is 35 percent, bringing that line to $499.50. Adhesive, batten stock, sealant, and insulation come to $95, and parts at or under $100 carry 100 percent markup, so that is $190. Parts total $689.50. Sales tax at 7.75 percent on parts and materials adds $53.44. Labor itself is not taxed.

That puts the ticket at $3,682.94, and because it is above $2,000 a 50 percent deposit of $1,841.47 starts the work. A much smaller job looks nothing like that. One failed seam where we install a batten and rebond eighteen inches of loose panel edge might be 4 hours at $210 for $840, plus $60 of batten stock and adhesive marked up to $120, plus $9.30 in tax, for $969.30 total.

What moves a job to the top of the range is scope you cannot see from inside: wet framing across several bays, a soaked slide out wall, a pattern that forces reskinning an entire room, or a leak that turns out to be the roof to sidewall seam rather than one flange. What keeps a job at the bottom is catching it in the first season, before the insulation is saturated and before the panel edge has swollen under the trim.

Start with your hands. Press along the wall in a grid, especially under windows, at the roof line, and around the slide out opening. A dry laminated wall feels firm and uniform. Wet luan feels soft, spongy, or crackly under pressure. Look for a wavy surface in raking light, a dark line where the panel meets the trim, and any gap opening at a corner molding. A musty smell in a closed coach is a reliable early signal even without a visible stain. We confirm with a pin type moisture meter, and when the reading is high we drill a small inspection hole and look inside with a borescope before quoting anything.

### Can you just paint over a water stain on the ceiling?

We can seal and paint a stain, and it will look fine for a while, but that is cosmetic work and we will say so on the estimate. A stain means water reached the panel. If the source is still open, the stain comes back, usually after the first heavy wet stretch. If the panel underneath has already softened, paint sits on a surface that is losing its bond and it will telegraph or sag later. The honest order is to find and stop the source, check the panel and insulation with a meter, and then decide whether the finish work is paint, a patch, or full replacement.
