Knowing which architecture you have changes where we look first.

We work on lifts as an assembly, not just as a box that moves. That means the lift itself, the mounting structure under it, the door and its hardware, the electrical supply and interlocks, and the floor the platform lands against inside the vehicle. A large share of lift complaints turn out to be problems in one of those surrounding systems rather than in the lift mechanism.

## Hydraulic Power Units, Cylinders, and Fluid

Most lifts run a small electric hydraulic power unit: a motor, a pump, a reservoir, a solenoid valve block, and a down valve that meters descent. Slow or weak lifting is usually low fluid, a tired pump, a failing motor under load, or a partly blocked filter. Lifts that raise fine but drift down on their own are almost always leaking past a seal or through the down valve. Lifts that drop too fast have a flow control problem, and that one gets the vehicle taken out of service immediately.

Cylinder service is straightforward when the rod and bore are still good. We inspect the rod for pitting and scoring, because a pitted rod will destroy a new seal kit within weeks, and in that case the cylinder gets replaced rather than resealed. Fluid gets flushed rather than topped when it has been contaminated, since dirty fluid is what eats valves and pumps in the first place. We use the fluid the lift manufacturer specifies; substituting the wrong hydraulic oil causes seal swelling and slow failures that are hard to trace later.

The last hydraulic item is the manual backup. Every lift has a way to bring the platform in and down without power, whether that is a hand pump or a release valve. Owners are often unaware of it or have never tried it. We verify that the backup works and we show the owner how to use it, because that system is what gets somebody off a platform when a battery dies in a parking lot.

## The Interlock Chain and Why the Lift Will Not Move

More lifts arrive dead from electrical faults than from mechanical ones. Every lift is wired through an interlock chain designed so it cannot deploy when the vehicle is unsafe: a door switch that must see the door fully open, a park or neutral signal from the transmission, sometimes a parking brake switch, and on some installations an ignition condition. Any one of those opening the circuit produces the same symptom, which is a lift that does nothing at all when the pendant button is pressed.

Because the symptom is identical regardless of cause, this is diagnostic work rather than parts swapping. We put a meter on the chain and follow power through it link by link until it disappears. The usual culprits are a door switch out of adjustment after the door was serviced, a corroded ground at the lift frame, a chafed harness where it crosses the door hinge area, and a main power connection that has enough corrosion to carry a test light but not enough to carry motor current.

The control pendant is its own category. Coiled pendant cords flex thousands of times and break internally at the strain relief, which produces intermittent operation that works fine on the bench and fails when the cord is moved. Pendant switches also fill with dirt and moisture. We test the pendant separately from the vehicle circuit so we are not chasing a lift fault that is actually a two dollar broken conductor inside a cord.

## Structural Mounting to the Floor and Frame

A lift is a cantilever. When the platform is out and loaded, all of that weight and the leverage it creates land on the mounting plates bolted to the vehicle floor and frame. On a van conversion those plates often bolt through the floor into reinforcement channels added at the time of conversion. On a coach the mounting frequently ties into the chassis frame or into structure built specifically for it. Either way, the mount takes cyclic load every single deployment.

Failure at the mount shows up as movement. The owner describes the lift as feeling loose, or notices the platform sitting slightly off level, or hears a clunk at the start of a cycle. Underneath, we usually find elongated bolt holes, a floor that has gone soft with corrosion or water damage around the fasteners, cracked welds at a reinforcement channel, or fasteners that were never the right grade for the load. Retorquing loose bolts into an elongated hole does not fix any of that.

This is where having a fabrication shop attached to the service floor changes the outcome. When the mounting structure needs repair, we cut out the damaged section, fabricate replacement plate or channel, weld it in, coat it, and remount the lift, all in the same building. A shop that only services lifts has to send the vehicle out for that work, which adds a tow, a second scheduling window, and a handoff where nobody owns the finished result.

We watch for drift, for uneven deployment, for the platform sitting level at ground contact, and for anything that flexes or clunks under load that did not under an empty cycle.

The safety devices get tested individually, not assumed. The outer roll stop must rise and lock before the platform leaves the ground and must not be defeatable by platform movement alone. The inner barrier or bridge plate must hold. Handrails must be tight at their mounts. Where the lift uses a platform sensor that prevents descent when the chair is not fully aboard, that sensor gets verified with an actual load rather than by pushing on it with a hand.

We also check the things people stop noticing. Anti slip surface on the platform wears smooth and becomes genuinely hazardous when wet, so it gets replaced when it is worn rather than mentioned as a future item. The same goes for cracked platform welds, worn pivot bushings that let the platform rock, and corroded fasteners in a salt air environment. Those are the items that turn into the next call, and it is cheaper to handle them while the lift is already apart.

We cut out corroded sections, fabricate replacement plate or channel in steel, weld it in, then clean, treat, prime, and coat the repair before the lift goes back on.
