Semi truck collision repair is the heaviest work on our floor, and Westminster owner operators and small fleets bring us tractors where the visible damage and the real damage are very different things. A Class 8 frame is two rails carrying everything, and a hit that looks like a hood and a fairing can hide a rail with a sweep in it. We measure first and quote second, every time.

## Rails Take a Set Long Before They Look Bent

Frame rails on a Class 8 tractor are heavy steel channel, and heavy steel does not always show what has happened to it. A rail can have a sweep or a diamond well outside tolerance and look perfectly straight to the eye from six feet away. The truck reports it instead through tire wear, tracking and cracked crossmember welds.

We measure against published dimensions for the chassis: sweep, sag, diamond and twist, plus the critical mounting points for suspension, fifth wheel and cab. That takes hours and it is the most valuable hours in the job, because everything downstream depends on it.

The decision that comes out of it is whether a rail can be straightened or has to be replaced. Cold straightening within limits is legitimate and standard. Heating a rail to pull it is not, because it changes the material. Where a rail is past what can be pulled cold, replacement or sectioning to the manufacturer's published method is the answer.

## Hoods and Fairings, Repair Versus Replace

Most modern tractor hoods are large fiberglass or composite assemblies, and they are among the most expensive single parts on the truck. That makes the repair versus replace decision a real one rather than automatic.

Fiberglass repairs very well when the damage is localized and the mounting points and hinge structure are undamaged. We grind out to a taper, lay structural glass on the backside, rebuild the face, fair and refinish. On a hood with a manageable crack that is often a third the cost of replacement.

Replacement becomes right when the mounting points have torn, when the hood no longer holds its shape at the latch, or when the damage spans multiple sections. Side fairings and chassis skirts are usually simple replacements, though on older or specialty trucks they get discontinued and we fabricate.

## Cab Structure, Mounts and Air Suspension

The cab sits on mounts, often air suspended at the rear, and those mounts are a common casualty in a collision that does not obviously involve the cab. A truck that has developed a new noise, a door that no longer closes the way it did, or a cab that leans slightly is telling you a mount has failed or the cab structure has moved.

Cab structural repair is real work: the doors, windshield opening and mounting points all have to end up back in dimension or the cab will leak, the doors will not seal and the glass will crack. We check the openings before and after rather than judging by fit.

Sleeper skins and their structure are the other item on a highway tractor. The joint between the cab and the sleeper takes flex constantly, and a hit that moves either one loads that joint. Water intrusion into a sleeper is a comfort problem and a corrosion problem at the same time.

## Steer Axle Geometry After a Front Hit

Any front impact on a tractor raises the same question: what happened to the steer axle and its mounting. Kingpins, tie rod ends, the drag link, the axle itself and the spring mounts can all take damage that is invisible until the truck is driven.

The sequence that works is measure the frame, repair the structure, then inspect and repair the steering and suspension components, then align. Aligning a truck before the frame is corrected produces a set of numbers that mean nothing.

This work bills at the $260 mechanical rate and diagnostic time at $285, credited against an authorized repair. On a front hit we generally recommend a full steering and front suspension inspection rather than only replacing what is visibly bent, because bent and damaged are not the same thing on these components.

Visible structural damage on a commercial vehicle is not just a repair matter. It affects whether the truck should be operating at all, and an operator who runs a tractor with a cracked frame is taking on risk that has nothing to do with the body shop.

What we do is repair to the manufacturer's published methods, document the measurements before and after, photograph the work, and hand the operator a file that shows exactly what was done.

### Will you certify my truck as roadworthy after the repair?

We book intake for when the parts land rather than taking the truck in to sit, and on staged jobs we return the tractor to service between phases where that is appropriate.
