How the Fee Credit Works

Diagnostic labor bills at $285 per hour. If you authorize the repair we quote, those diagnostic hours come off the repair invoice as a credit. A two hour assessment at $570 that leads to an authorized $9,000 repair means you pay $9,000, not $9,570. The credit applies to the assessment hours specifically, and it applies when the repair is authorized at our shop. That is the whole mechanism and there is nothing buried in it.

There is also a $150 RV systems assessment, which is a separate and narrower check covering power, plumbing, propane, and slide operation. On a collision file it is usually run alongside the structural assessment, because systems damage in the impact zone is common and invisible from outside. That $150 is credited against an authorized repair on the same terms as the diagnostic hours.

If you decide not to proceed, you keep the report and you owe the diagnostic time. That is a fair trade and most owners see it that way once they hold the document. A written assessment with photographs, meter readings, and measurements is what a carrier acts on and what a second shop can quote against. It is a portable asset, not a fee for the privilege of getting an opinion.

Moisture Mapping and the Tap Test

The tap test is exactly what it sounds like and it is one of the most reliable diagnostic methods we have on a laminated wall. A sound laminated panel returns a sharp, consistent tone. A panel where the fiberglass has separated from the substrate returns a dull, hollow sound. We tap in a grid pattern across the damaged area and outward until the tone goes back to normal, then mark the boundary. That boundary is almost always significantly larger than the visible damage.

Moisture mapping runs in parallel with a pin type or pinless meter, taking readings on a grid across the interior wall surfaces, around window and door openings, along the floor edge, and in the compartment areas below. Each reading is logged by location. Elevated readings that trace a path back to a specific seam or fastener line tell you where water is entering, which is the difference between fixing the leak and repeatedly repairing the damage it caused.

Together these two methods define the actual repair boundary before anything is cut. A collision repair that stops at the visible damage on a wall with laminate separation extending twelve inches further will crack again along that boundary. Owners are often surprised how far the marked area extends past the dent. That surprise is exactly the value of the assessment, and it is the number that should drive the claim.

Laser Measurement Against Factory Reference Points

When the damage pattern suggests structure moved, measurement replaces opinion. On a trailer that is axle centers, spring hanger locations, coupler position, and rail ends. On a motorhome chassis it is the control points the chassis maker publishes. Every reading is compared against the specification and recorded with its tolerance.

This is what separates a real assessment from a visual estimate. A rear corner impact on a long trailer can put a measurable twist at the tongue, and nothing about the appearance of the rear corner tells you that. Conversely, damage that looks alarming sometimes measures perfectly within tolerance, which turns what an owner feared was a frame job into skin work. Both outcomes save money, and only measurement produces either one.

The measurement sheet goes into the report with the tolerance for each point noted alongside the reading. Adjusters take that document seriously because it is verifiable and repeatable. Typical partial teardown is removing interior wall panel in the damage zone, pulling a section of exterior trim or a fender skirt, or dropping a compartment liner to see the back side of the impact. Two to six hours of diagnostic time covers most of it. What comes back is the actual condition of the framing, the wiring, the plumbing runs, and the insulation, which is the information a repair plan and a claim both need.

The economics are straightforward. A $900 teardown that reveals crushed framing and wet substrate turns a $3,000 estimate into an accurate $11,000 estimate before you have committed to anything. What the report does not do is hide contingency in vague operations. If teardown is likely to reveal more, the report says so, names the specific areas of concern, and states what additional teardown would cost to resolve. On a collision file we usually run it alongside the structural assessment, because wiring runs, water lines, and propane lines pass through exactly the areas that get hit and the damage is invisible from outside. It is $150, credited against an authorized repair. If your damage is a scuffed corner cap well away from any systems, you can skip it. If anything hit near a slide, a compartment, or the front or rear cap, run it.
