Most published calendars are organized around protecting a vehicle from hard cold, which is not the local threat. Here the vehicle sits under intense sun for most of the year, breathes salt bearing marine air, cycles through wide day to night temperature swings, and faces dry offshore winds in the fall. Why a Southern California Calendar Looks Different

The standard maintenance calendar is a cold climate document. It is organized around winterizing plumbing, protecting against frost damage, and recovering from a season of storage. January Through March

This is the wet quarter and the natural leak detection window. Rain is the only reliable test of whether the seals you maintained last year are still doing their job, so the priority in this quarter is finding water intrusion while it is still small and while the evidence is fresh. Inspect after each significant rain rather than waiting for the season to end.

It is also the best working weather of the year for anything requiring extended time outdoors or on the roof. Temperatures are moderate, ultraviolet exposure is at its annual low, and sealant cures predictably rather than skinning over too quickly. If a roof needs resealing, this quarter and the next are when to do it. Booking shop work in this window is easier as well, since the heavy season has not started.

For units that sat through the holidays, this is the wake up inspection. Check tire pressures and sidewalls, exercise the slides and jacks, run every system, and look under the vehicle for anything that took up residence. Rodent damage to wiring and propane lines is common in units that sit, and it is far cheaper to find in a driveway than on a trip.

Everything on the roof deserves attention here, because it is the last time this year that a full afternoon up there is pleasant and that sealant will cure at a sensible rate.

Finish protection belongs in this quarter. Wash, decontaminate, and apply protection to painted and gelcoat surfaces before the highest ultraviolet months, because protection applied in April prevents damage that a detail in September can only partially correct. Clearcoat failure is not repairable by polishing once it begins, and refinishing is a paint booth job. Protection applied now is preventive. Correction applied later is a booth and a bill.

Mechanical readiness matters here too. Cooling systems, air conditioning, tires, and brakes all face their hardest work in the next few months, and they are far cheaper to service on a schedule than on a shoulder. Check tire date codes, not just tread. Ultraviolet exposure ages recreational vehicle tires out of service well before their tread wears out. Date codes are stamped on the sidewall and take about ten seconds to read.

Schedule any substantial work for early morning or defer it to fall. Work performed in poor conditions costs the same and lasts considerably less time.

Interior heat management protects more than comfort. Sustained high interior temperatures degrade adhesives, vinyl, wiring insulation, and the bond lines in laminated panels. A unit sitting closed in full sun through a Southern California summer accumulates real damage, which is why covered storage or a well fitted cover is worth the cost here even though owners in milder climates rarely need one.

This is also the peak use quarter, so inspection frequency should go up even as project work goes down. Check seals and the roof after every trip, because road debris impact and highway speed wind loading are the two most common ways a sound seal becomes an open one mid season. A roof and seal check after each trip takes fifteen minutes and catches damage while it is still a sealant repair rather than a substrate repair.

Treat this quarter as the annual reset. Whatever gets skipped here becomes a leak in January, and leaks discovered in January have usually been running for weeks.

Do a complete sealant audit, not a spot check. Go over every penetration on the roof, every window and door frame, every compartment seal, and the full roof to wall perimeter seam. Ultraviolet damage accumulated over the summer shows up as shrinkage, cracking, chalking, and lifted edges, and any of those is an entry point once it rains. Photograph the roof as you go, so that next year you have a baseline to compare against.

This is also when to decide about storage. A unit going into a long idle period needs different preparation than one that will be used through the winter, and the decisions about covering, battery maintenance, tire protection, and pest exclusion are all easier to make now than after the vehicle has already sat for two months. Making those decisions in advance is cheaper too, since covers and battery maintainers are easier to source before everyone else needs them.

The damage we see afterward is rarely dramatic. It is deployed awnings destroyed, roof membrane punctured by driven debris, vent covers cracked or gone, and slide toppers torn, all of it inexpensive to prevent and expensive to repair.

The single highest value habit is never leaving an awning deployed unattended during wind season. Awning damage is the most common wind related claim on recreational vehicles by a wide margin, and it frequently takes the mounting hardware and a section of sidewall with it, which converts a fabric replacement into a structural repair. The fabric is the cheap part. The sidewall it tears out of is not.

For units in open storage, orientation and preparation matter. Secure or remove anything mounted externally that can catch wind, confirm all vent covers are latched and sound, and inspect the roof after any significant event rather than assuming an undamaged appearance from the ground means an undamaged membrane. Debris punctures are small, easy to miss from ground level, and perfectly capable of admitting enough water over a wet season to require substrate replacement. Fifteen minutes on a ladder after a wind event is the whole prevention.

The most expensive water intrusion jobs we take in are almost always on units that sat for extended periods with nobody checking, where a small leak had months of uninterrupted opportunity. Nobody was inside to notice a stain, and the damage compounded quietly for an entire season.

What to Bring a Shop Each Year

Structural inspection catches slide opening movement and frame corrosion. Neither is diagnosable from the outside, and both are dramatically cheaper to address early. An annual inspection is also the cheapest way to build a written condition record, which matters later if you ever file a claim.

Bring records. A dated file of what was inspected, what was resealed, and what was replaced does two jobs at once. It tells the shop what to prioritize, and it becomes the maintenance documentation that defends against exclusion and betterment arguments if you ever have a claim. Far less than a national calendar suggests, but it is not zero. Inland areas of Orange County do reach frost temperatures on some winter nights, and an exposed water line or a low point drain in open air can be affected during a cold snap. For most locally stored units, the reasonable approach is to drain the system if the vehicle will sit unused through winter, which is worth doing anyway to prevent stagnation, and to pay attention when a genuine cold night is forecast. What is not worth doing is following a full cold climate winterizing procedure every year as though the vehicle were stored in a hard winter region. The time and coolant that procedure consumes is better spent on sealant and finish protection, which is where local damage actually comes from.

Is a cover worth the cost, or does it cause more problems?

A properly fitted cover is worth it here, and a loose tarp causes more problems than it solves. The distinction is important. A fitted cover made of breathable material, secured so it does not move against the surface, blocks the ultraviolet exposure that is degrading your roof membrane, sealant, tires, awning fabric, and clearcoat continuously.
