How Long RV Collision Repair Actually Takes

How long does rv collision repair take is the question every owner asks first, and the honest answer starts with a breakdown rather than a number. A repair is a sequence of stages, each with its own clock, and two of those clocks are outside the shop entirely: parts availability and insurance authorization. Understanding where the time actually goes lets you plan around the downtime instead of calling weekly for an update that has not changed.

What Are the Stages of an RV Collision Repair?

Every repair moves through the same six stages, and knowing which one a vehicle is in tells you far more than a percentage complete. Intake and assessment establishes the visible damage and documents the vehicle's condition. Teardown removes trim and damaged assemblies to expose the real scope, and it is the stage that produces the supplement. Structural work follows, where anything bent is measured, corrected, and verified before a dollar goes into appearance.

Then comes substrate work: panel repair or replacement, bonding, filling, and block sanding to a straight and stable surface. Refinish covers sealer, base color, clear, and blending into adjacent panels, plus cure time. Reassembly and verification is the final stage, where trim goes back, every seal and latch is checked, and water testing is done wherever the repair touched a penetration. Each stage produces a specific output that the next stage depends on, which is why skipping ahead creates rework rather than speed.

Stages do not overlap the way owners assume. Refinish cannot begin until substrate is complete, and substrate cannot begin until structure is verified. A vehicle waiting on a structural part is not quietly progressing on paint. When you ask a shop for status, asking which stage the unit is in produces a much more useful answer than asking what percentage is done. Stage is a fact that both sides can verify, while percentage complete is an impression that nobody can check.

How Long Does Each Stage Usually Take?

Intake and assessment is typically one to two days, longer if the carrier's inspection has to be scheduled around it. Teardown runs one to four days depending on how much interior finish has to come out, and on a coach with a damaged slide or a compromised wall, that can be substantial. Structural work varies enormously: a single directional pull with verification may be two days, while a multi point correction with sectioning can be two weeks.

Substrate work is where large vehicles diverge sharply from cars. A sidewall repair on a coach involves surface area that a passenger vehicle simply does not have, and block sanding a long panel to a true surface is slow, skilled work. Expect several days for a contained repair and one to three weeks for extensive panel work with bonding, since structural adhesives have cure schedules that cannot be shortened. Preparation rather than spraying is where most refinish hours actually go on a coach.

Refinish is usually three to seven days including preparation, spraying, cure, and any polishing, and longer if multiple color stages or graphics are involved. Reassembly and verification runs two to five days. Add all of it together and a genuinely structural repair lands somewhere between four and ten weeks of shop time, before parts delays are considered. Any single stage can run long, and because the stages do not overlap, a delay in one moves everything behind it.

Why Do Parts Drive the Calendar More Than Labor?

Passenger vehicles are supported by an enormous parts ecosystem. Original equipment, aftermarket, and salvage networks mean most components can be sourced in days. Recreational vehicles have nothing comparable. A sidewall panel, a cap molding, a slide fascia, or a specific window may have been produced for one floorplan across a short run, and the manufacturer may be the only source that ever existed. Salvage sources exist for some components, but the supply is thin and unpredictable enough that no schedule should assume it.

That produces lead times measured in weeks rather than days, and it produces a second problem: discontinued parts. When a component is no longer available at all, the repair converts into fabrication, which means building the part, and that has to be estimated, approved, and then executed. Both the approval and the execution add calendar time that no amount of shop capacity resolves. Fabrication is also work that has to be scheduled around the same bays and booth as everything else.

The practical consequence is that the order date for long lead parts is the single most important date in the whole repair. Parts ordered at teardown arrive while structural and substrate work is happening. Parts ordered after final approval arrive after everything else is finished, and the vehicle sits complete except for one component. This is why authorizing teardown early matters so much more than it sounds like it should.

Which Repairs Take Longer Than Owners Expect?

Slide out repairs are consistently underestimated. A slide is a moving structural assembly with a mechanism, a seal system, an opening that has to stay square, and interior finish on both sides. Correcting one means addressing all of it, and the adjustment and verification cycle at the end is iterative rather than a single setting. What looks like a bent fascia is regularly a two week job. Budget for adjustment cycles rather than assuming a single setting will hold on the first try.

Water damage repair is the second. The visible stain is the smallest part of the affected area, the wet zone has to be mapped and fully opened, and drying has to be verified with a meter before anything is rebonded. Drying alone can consume a week, and it cannot be compressed without compromising everything applied on top of it. Meter readings rather than appearance decide when drying is finished, and a wall that looks dry can still read wet.

The third is anything involving a full sidewall refinish on a large coach. The surface area is enormous, the preparation is where the quality actually comes from, and the panel has to be laid out and sanded true before color goes near it. Owners see a paint job and assume a few days. The spraying is a few days. The preparation is not. Block sanding a long panel true is slow, skilled work that produces no visible progress until color goes on.

Does Insurance Approval Add Time?

It does, and it is worth planning for rather than resenting. The first estimate is written from visible damage. Teardown produces findings, and those findings become a supplement, and most carriers review supplements before authorizing the additional work. On a straightforward file that review is a few days. On a complex one with multiple supplements or a required reinspection, each cycle can add a week. Each cycle is short on its own and they accumulate faster than anyone plans for.

Reinspection is the most schedule sensitive step, because it requires a person to physically look at the vehicle while it is apart. Scheduling that visit depends on adjuster availability, and the vehicle generally waits in its torn down state until it happens. A shop that photographs teardown thoroughly can sometimes resolve a supplement on documentation alone, which is one concrete reason detailed teardown photography matters. Ask whether the shop submits supplements with full photographic support, because that answer predicts the pace of the whole claim.

The fastest files share one characteristic, which is a single responsive contact on the owner's side. When a carrier needs a signature, a decision on a betterment item, or confirmation of a coverage question, and the answer arrives the same day, the file keeps moving. When those requests sit for a week, the entire repair sits with them, and no amount of shop capacity changes that. Naming one decision maker at the start removes most of that risk for very little effort.

Can Turnaround Be Compressed?

Some of it, and it is worth knowing which parts. Authorizing teardown immediately is the single highest impact decision, because it starts the parts clock and produces the supplement earlier. Approving the diagnostic or systems assessment up front does the same thing for anything involving electrical or mechanical systems, where diagnosis is the gate on everything downstream. Both of those decisions cost a small amount up front and buy back real calendar time, which is a trade worth making almost every time.

Bundling helps in the other direction. If there are cosmetic items you have been putting off, handling them during a collision repair costs far less added time than a separate visit later, because masking, setup, and cure are already happening. The added labor is real but the added calendar is small. Ask for the added items to be priced separately so the trade is visible rather than folded into a single number you cannot evaluate. Deciding this before masking begins is much cheaper than deciding it afterward.

What cannot be compressed is chemistry and physics. Adhesives cure on their own schedule, paint has flash and cure requirements, and a wet core dries at whatever rate it dries. A shop that agrees to shorten those is agreeing to a repair that fails later, and the failure shows up after everyone has moved on. Ask which parts of the schedule are cure time, because that portion is honest and fixed.

What Makes a Repair Run Past Its Estimate?

Three causes account for most overruns. The first is additional hidden damage found after the supplement was already written, which happens most often on water intrusion where the wet area turns out to extend beyond the initial map. The second is a part that arrives damaged or incorrect, which restarts the lead time on that component while everything else waits. Both of those are discovered rather than predicted, which is why a stage based schedule survives them better than a single date does.

The third is authorization delay, and it is the most preventable. A supplement sitting in review, a coverage question waiting on an owner decision, or a betterment item nobody has agreed to all stop work on the affected portion of the job. None of these are visible from outside, which is why an owner calling for an update can hear that nothing has changed for a week and assume the shop is idle.

The reasonable expectation to set with any shop is a stage based schedule rather than a single delivery date, with a commitment to notify you when a stage completes or when something blocks. That format makes delays legible. A date that slips twice with no explanation is a communication problem. A date that moves because a supplement is in review is just what a claim looks like. Ask which of the two is happening whenever a date moves, and expect a specific answer.

How Should You Plan Around the Downtime?

Plan against the top of the range, not the middle. If a shop tells you four to ten weeks, arranging your season around ten weeks costs you nothing if the unit arrives early and saves a great deal of trouble if it does not. Trips booked against an optimistic date are the source of most of the friction between owners and shops, and the date was usually presented as a range that got remembered as a promise.

Ask three specific questions at intake: what the parts lead time is on the longest lead item, when those parts will be ordered, and how supplements will be communicated. Those three answers determine most of your calendar. Then ask for stage completion notifications rather than weekly calls, which gives you real information at the moments it changes. Weekly calls generate reassurance rather than information, and they consume the time of the person who could be moving the job forward.

If the vehicle is a business asset, the calculation shifts from convenience to arithmetic. Work out the daily cost of the unit being down, then use that number to evaluate whether expedited parts, a rental substitute, or a phased repair that returns the unit to service before cosmetic work is completed makes financial sense. That is a legitimate option on commercial units and it is worth raising. Ask the question directly rather than waiting to be offered the option, because many shops assume owners want everything finished at once.

Can I use my RV while waiting for parts?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking directly rather than assuming either way. If the unit is drivable, structurally sound, weather tight, and the outstanding work is cosmetic or involves a component that is not safety related, some shops will release it and schedule the vehicle to return when the part arrives. That is genuinely better for everyone, since a vehicle sitting in a yard is helping nobody. The conditions matter though. A unit with compromised structure, an active leak path, a slide that does not seal, or systems that were disturbed during teardown should not go back into service, and a shop declining to release it in that state is protecting you. Ask two questions: is the vehicle safe and weather tight as it currently sits, and how much rework does releasing and returning it add. If the answer to the first is yes and the second is small, it is usually worth doing.

What does teardown actually involve and why does it take days?

Teardown is the controlled disassembly of everything covering the damaged area, and on a recreational vehicle that reaches much further than owners expect. Exterior trim, moldings, lights, and any component through bolted to the wall come off first. If the interior side is involved, cabinetry, wall panels, and finish trim come out too, and those are often installed in an order that requires removing undamaged items to reach damaged ones. Wiring and plumbing runs behind walls have to be identified and protected before anything is cut. Every step gets photographed, both to support the supplement and to serve as reassembly instructions. The time is not in removing fasteners, it is in doing it without creating new damage and in documenting enough that the vehicle can go back together correctly. Rushed teardown is one of the most reliable sources of extra cost later.

How accurate are the delivery dates shops give?

A date given at intake is a projection built on assumptions that have not been tested yet, and the biggest assumption is scope. Until teardown is complete, nobody knows the real extent of the damage, so an intake date is an informed estimate about a job that has not been fully defined. Accuracy improves dramatically at two moments. The first is after teardown and supplement approval, when the scope is known. The second is when long lead parts have confirmed arrival dates. After both of those, a date should be reasonably firm and a shop should be willing to commit to it. Before both, treat the date as a range. The useful thing to ask is which assumptions the date depends on, because that tells you what would have to happen for it to move, and it turns an unexplained delay into a predictable one.

Does paying out of pocket make a repair faster than a claim?

It removes one source of delay and leaves the others untouched. Without a carrier in the loop there is no supplement review cycle and no reinspection scheduling, which on a complex file can genuinely save one to three weeks. What should I do with the RV contents before drop off?

Remove everything that is not attached to the vehicle. Personal belongings, tools, bedding, kitchen items, electronics, and anything with sentimental or monetary value should come out before the unit arrives. Shops carry insurance on the vehicle, not on its contents, and repairs generate dust, require moving interior components, and sometimes require removing cabinetry entirely. Empty the refrigerator and pantry completely, since a unit can sit for weeks. Photograph the interior condition before you leave, including the odometer, which establishes the state of the vehicle at drop off. If the repair involves interior work, ask specifically which areas will be opened so you can clear those spaces and remove anything mounted nearby. Ten minutes of preparation prevents the most common frustration in the whole process, which is discovering something was damaged or lost and having no record of whether it was there to begin with.
